It’s fair to say that when you set aside the once-in-a-generation phenomenon that is Adele and 21, Katy Perry is pretty much the leading pop star in the world right now. One-and-a-half years after its release, the star is still breaking records left and right with Teenage Dream, as “The One That Got Away” became Katy’s 6th (!) single from the album to hit No. 1 on Pop Songschart.  With the kind of unprecedented success that Katy has enjoyed with Teenage Dream, it’s an understatement to say that expectations are high for her next album. Can lightning strike twice? Will she be able to come up with pop nuggets as juicy as “Teenage Dream” or “Last Friday Night”?  Complicating things is Katy’s recent divorce from Russell Brand. Britney Spears often looks uncomfortable while dancing these days, which makes her the perfect candidate for a revamp of the classic contortionist-friendly game Twister. Hasbro has announced a new dance edition of the old pretzel-making favorite, which Brit-Brit says she rediscovered in recent years thanks to her boys. It will feature a special remix of “Till The World Ends,” and the #willpower contributor will also appear in promotional materials. Back when Katy Perry posted a photo of herself in mermaid garb planking as a mermaid, we had no idea what was going on. Was the pop star following in Lady Gaga’s flippers and jumping on the mer-person trend for a new video? Turns out the planking pic was taken on set of a David LaChapelle photo shoot for ghd’s Air hairdryer — because a mermaid, whose hair is constantly wet, is in most need of a blow-dry, right? “It’s as if Lisa Frank had done The Little Mermaid,” described Katy. So, are you digging her pink locks, or are you feeling blue?

Sort of a big weekend for Madonna; dare I call it a “make or break” weekend?  I mean, it’s been years since the Material Girl has been pop music relevant, and with the rise of Lady Gaga and her outlandishness, is there even room for her on the hit music scene?  We’re about to find out.  Her song, “Gimme All Your Love” features Nicki Minaj (which plays, to me, as an attempt to ‘hip’ up the track and draw in younger ears), and it’s video was released concurrently at 8:30am this morning.  You can hear the song on my Daily Download tab, or watch the video HERE!  Oh yeah, then she’s got the halftime show at the Super Bowl; which explains why so many of your gay friends are more excited than usual for the big game.
